The Book as Print Culture

Print culture encompasses the many forms of printed text and printed visual communication. Written culture including the book has had a profound impact on human society. The use of the printing press dramatically expanded the written culture and contributed to a rise in literacy. The term "print culture" relates to the cultural products generated by the shift from oral tradition and individually produced manuscripts to an environment rich with printed materials.
