Founded in 814 BCE, Carthage marked the beginning of rise of the Phoenicians in Sicily, Italy, and Sardinia. Their maritime trading culture contributed to the expansion of literature throughout the empire. They spread the use of Phoencician alphabet. Unfortunately few written records survived.
