More Las Vegas and Valley of Fire

The first of March we headed from Phoenix to Laughlin, then up to Las Vegas for a month.

Valley of Fire
This was our second trip to this area. Check out our last trip at Year 1: Valley of Fire. This trip we decided to take the motorhome. We headed up the Interstate and got off at the Valley of Fire exit. We spent some time exploring the features of the Valley of Fire State Park that we missed the last time. We enjoyed hiking around the "bee hives" as shown in the pictures below. Late in the afternoon, we headed to the campground at Echo Bay to spend the night. This campground was a little run down, but it met our needs fine. It was near Lake Mead, so lots of boaters have homes in the area.

Geocaching on the Bitter Spring Scenic Byway
Our focus for this trip was geocaching. To learn more about geocaching, go to geocaching.com. We found the east entrance to the Bitter Springs Scenic Byway and headed down the gravel road. As we drove along rocky parts of the road, we were glad we had our 4 wheel drive (even if it is a "piece of junk" Explorer). We were thrilled to find the place we went rock hounding last year. We were even more interested to find the place where Larry found the purple chalcedony. Other people had found the same spot and taken the rest of the seam of rock.
There were two geocaches on this road and we successful found both with little difficulty. The first one was located near an old borax mine on the top of a hill. The other was found down an interesting canyon.
