Lois Lowry, the author of Number the Stars, was born at the beginning of the war. What was she like? Why did she enjoy writing about this time period?

 

Task

Explore the life and books of Lois Lowry. Create a class bulletin board about Lois Lowry and her books.

Process and Resources

  1. Why do you think she wrote about this time period? Create a list of questions you'd like to ask Lois Lowry. Use the websites below to try to find the answers.
  2. Use the software Timeliner by Tom Snyder to create a timeline of Lois Lowry's life. Include important world events as well as the time periods when her books were written and the times they were set.
  3. Lois Lowry wrote another book set in the same time period called Autumn Street that depicts life on the home front in Philadelphia during World War II. Compare the two books.
  4. Or, read another book by Lois Lowry and compare the writing style.
  5. Create a sign, list, poem, or drawing to include on the class bulletin board.
