Gary Paulsen vividly describes the Battle of Bull Run and Charley's experience. Charley's first thought is, "Make it all stop!"

Task

  • Read Chapter 3 - Toward Manassas and Chapter 4 - Bull Run (pages 14-26)
  • Write a journal entry to a diary about your first experience in battle.

Project Guidelines

Use the following guidelines for completing your project:

  • The journal entry should be written in cursive.
  • It should have the appropriate heading (Date and place)
  • All fives senses should be evident in the writing.
  • List resources used.
  • Evalution - 75 points
    • Handwriting = 10
      • 0-3 errors = 10
      • 4-6 errors = 7
      • 7-9 errors = 4
      • 10 + errors = 0
    • Fives sennses = 40
      • All five senses used = 40
      • 4 of the 5 senses used = 35
      • 3 of the 5 senses used = 30
      • 2 of the 5 senses used = 25
      • 1 of the 5 senses used = 20
    • Resources = 25
      • 5 + (at least one internet) = 25
      • 3-4 (at least one internet) = 20
      • 2 (at least one internet) = 15
      • 1 only = 10

Conclusion

  • Compare and contrast your journal entry with the author's description of the battle.
    • What kind of feelings are created between the two pieces of writing?
    • If someone read your journal entry, would they get a true feel for a battle? Give five reasons why or why not.
