This Senior Fitness guide would be a welcome addition to an entire program
targeting senior citizens. Other aspects which could be part of this
overall program include:
- Computer classes
- General financial planning seminars (series to include stocks, annuities,
social security, etc.) to be conducted by a person or persons well-recognized
as having expertise in the field of financial planning
- Dealing with the kids (and grandkids, and great-grandkids). Senior
citizens all too frequently find themselves taking on tasks because their
families feel that they have inordinate amounts of free time. This
program could discuss options and offer suggestions for how to not become
overburdened with these types of requests.
- More class/seminar possibilities might be: funeral planning, how to select
a good travel agent or vacation destination, how to spot a scam, home repairs
for those who don't want to spend a million, etc.
- If adequate conference room space is available, the library could sponsor
a low-impact or armchair fitness program, demonstrating the types of
easy-to-do exercises which almost anyone can do.
Promoting the library, the fitness guide, and the available programs could be
done by:
- Librarian presentation at a regularly-scheduled OASIS meeting
- Booth at mall to be manned during special events, such as job fair,
college fair, health fair, and/or the early morning hours when the mall
walkers are out in force
- The local television and/or radio stations which usually have What's Going
On In The Community segments.
- Local newspapers, many or most of which feature community calendars as
well as What's New At The Library columns.
