Riding the Reading Roller Coaster:
Read and Write Informational Books

Connect reading to all your subject areas. Carol Hurst's website contains books and ideas across subject areas. For example, there are many good math books and websites.

Use the Internet to help students understand the importance of using multiple resources in their research. For example, ask students to go to different websites on the same topic and compare the information they find.

Explore each of the following states websites. Compare and contrast the contents. What are the advantages and disadvantages to using the web for this activity? Discuss which would work best for a particular kind of project:

Young Troopers

Read a nature book series such as the Take Along-Guides by Mel Boring and the One Small Square series by Donald Silver. Use these as the basis for a series of activities.

Consider short nonfiction chapter books that can be read in short segments. For example, Young Troopers contains true stories of early settler children.

Go beyond book reports and explore interesting ways to share information students discover. Explore the following links and use the assignments below to come up with an interesting project.
