ALA and NECC Conferences |

ALA in Chicago Annette made a trip to Chicago for the American Library Association conference. Although she was busy with meetings most of the time, she enjoyed a subway ride and walk downtown to the Taste of Chicago food festival. She ate way too much and enjoyed listening to Clint Black at the outdoor concert area. Annette also took the subway to the Apollo Theatre to see the Menopause Musical. It was hilarious! The theatre was filled with middle aged women. There was only one male in the entire audience! The songs are based on music of the 60s and 70s. The music tells the story of four women (Power Woman, Earth Mother, Soap Star and Iowa Housewife) at a Bloomingdale’s lingerie sale. One of the four actors was Megan Cavanagh who played Marla Hooch in the movie A League of their Own. The theatre even served drinks named the "hot flash" and "night sweats".

NECC in Philadelphia Annette and Larry met at the Philadelphia airport for the NECC (National Educational Computing Conference). Annette came in from Chicago and Larry from Denver. We always enjoy NECC because we meet up with friends, peers, and former students. Below is a photo of Annette with her friend, Kathy Schrock, before one of Annette's sessions.
Annette ran into lots of friends and students from Indiana.

Fun in Philadelphia One of the highlights of the conference was our evening out in old Philadelphia. Annette and Larry met up with friends from the Children's Museum of Indianapolis. We enjoyed dinner at the City Tavern. The original tavern was constructed in 1772-1773, but damaged by fire. This replicate was completed in 1976 for the bicentennial. The tavern serves authentic 18th century food. Musicians and servers wear period costumes. We even tried a specialty drink called the "shrub" served in cold pewter goblets.

Carriage Ride After dinner our foursome decided to take a carriage ride around the city. A carriage ride is something that we (Annette and Larry) had always talked about doing, but had never taken the time to enjoy. It was well worth the money and lots of fun!

Our carriage driver provided interesting commentary as we explored downtown Philadelphia. |
