Spearfish Canyon Our drive from the Badlands through Rapid City to Spearfish was quick. We were disappointed in the overpriced new RV park near the Interstate. However since we were only planning to spend a couple days, we decided to stay anyway.

Bridal Veil Falls Our first day was spent on the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway through the area where the movie Dances With Wolves was filmed. Much of the area is part of the Black Hills National Forest. We made a quick stop to enjoy the beautiful Spearfish Creek and the Bridal Veil Falls next to the road. Although signs were intended to discourage people from climbing around the falls, there were a few people climbing on the slippery, moss covered ledges. It looked very dangerous to us, so we stuck to the great view from the bottom of the falls.

Dances with Wolves We continued down the road to the location where Dances with Wolves was filmed. We walked across a stream and gazed up at the ridges all around. We could visualize the actors on their horses riding along the ridge. Annette couldn't resist climbing to the top. |
A few miles past the Dances with Wolves site we found the Roughlock Falls. |
We continued our scenic drive through the small town of Savoy. We stopped at a cute store called Cheyenne Crossing. The rock formations were interesting. We stopped to photograph the spires below. |
As we drove through Leadville, we stopped for a view of the mine. It was strange how the mine was in the middle of the town. We continued down the road to Deadwood and stopped for supper at one of the casinos. |
