Glacier National Park - Going to the Sun Road We had a busy summer, so we didn't have much time to enjoy the beauty of the park. We decided to take a couple days off after Labor Day weekend to take a quick trip. Our adventure began with a drive through the park along Going-to-the-Sun Road. We bought a great audio tour CD that we enjoyed throughout the drive highlighting interesting park information as well as songs by Jack Gladstone. After passing Lake McDonald Lodge we considered stopping at the Trail of the Cedars, but the parking lot was full so we continued down the road. We stopped at the overlook for McDonald Creek and took some photos. |
We also stopped at an area called The Loop and later at Weeping Wall. While Larry took photos (below notice Heaven's Peak in the distance and the road on the right), Annette did some sketching and enjoyed the views. |
When we arrived at the Logan Pass Visitor Center, the parking lot was overflowing so we decided to stop on the way back in a couple days. Our next stop was the Jackson Glacier Overlook where we took the photo below. |
Next we stopped for a hike along Saint Mary Lake. Our walk took us by Baring Falls, then along the lake on a nature trail to Sun Point. |
The lighting and rocks at the base of Baring Falls was really interesting. The rocks were tilted in varied directions and the water roared. |
There were beautiful views in all directions along the Sun Point Nature Trail.
|
The lighting was great and it allowed wonderful reflections on the water.
|
On the way back down the trail we stumbled upon a deer. He didn't seem bothered by our presence. |
We stopped for photographs along the lake. A popular place for photographs is the view of Goose Lake Island, a tiny island in the middle of the lake. It's right behind Annette's head in the photo below. |
As we drove along the road near Rising Sun campground, we could see the remains of the Red Eagle Lake fire that was still burning.
|
We continued to the east entrance of the park and stopped at the Saint Mary Visitor Center. Finally, we drove through Saint Mary and Babb to the Many Glacier area of the park. After checking in at the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn, we decided to eat dinner at the Many Glaciers Lodge. |
