Life is not static, comfortable, or predictable (Williams, Red, 153).

Naturescapes began as a way for Annette Lamb and Larry Johnson to share their love of nature. All of the content and photographs you find at this website were created by Annette and Larry on their adventures traveling around North America. In addition, we sometimes provide useful links to other resources.

Our mission is to seek out and share the beauty of our natural world. Nature is the birthplace of inspiration.

This project provides informational reading and writing opportunities for life long learners of all ages. It is intended to promote the love of learning by connecting science, social studies, and other content areas through the exploration of how people can live in harmony with nature.

Reading Connections

Reading is an essential life skill for everyone. One way to help learners become more fluent readers is by reading and rereading passages. With each reading, a student becomes more fluid, expressive, and animated. This promotes fluency and comprehension. Sometimes multiple copies of the same text are needed at different reading levels to provide students with increasingly difficult passages. Learners become more confident as additional words and more complex phrases are incorporated into the writing.

Increasingly, students spend a majority of their time reading fictional books. Their nonfiction reading tends to be the textbook which often focuses on bits and pieces rather full-length, authentic texts. However, according to Dr. Brenda Parkes in Real-world Reading & Writing: Nonfiction opens doors to a life of learning, the research shows that more than 80 percent of what we read and write as we go about our daily lives is nonficton text. There's a need for more experiences that involve learners in meaningful nonfiction reading.

Why provide all these materials for free?

If you want happiness for an hour take a nap.
If you want happiness for a day -- go fishing.
If you want happiness for a year -- inherit a fortune.
If you want happiness for a lifetime -- help someone else. - Chinese Proverb
