A textbook is an instructional guide to a specific area of study. Generally associated with a particular subject and target audience, textbooks have been widely used in teaching since the 1800s.

Increasingly educators are using tradebooks and virtual resources along with their own instructional materials and guides. However some educators prefer or require traditional print materials for research projects.
